The Homestead Act, May 20, 1862

Read it for yourself.

When a homesteader claimed a piece of public land through the Homestead Act of 1862, they could receive 160 acres of public land if they lived for 5 continuous years on the property and made improvements to the property. The settler had to be a U. S. citizen, or be in the process of becoming one.

These are the final proof notices and the witnesses at the end of their 5 years, posted in the newspaper.
