Samuel Tate

Samuel Tate of Bibb County had a wife named Sarah, but her maiden name is not presently known. She was born in SC about 1780 and married Samuel Tate there about 1799. She was not the Sarah/Sally Fortner who married a different Samuel Tate and moved from SC to TN to IL. The Samuel Tate of Bibb County was born about 1780 in TN (per 1850 Bibb Co census), md in SC and had children there and in TN (per children's birthplaces), then moved to Bibb County just before the 1830 census. He died 12 APR 1852 and his wife Sarah died between 1850 and 1860. I am their descendant.

Sarah Tate:

The differences between Sarah and Sarah/Sally Fortner are further supported by two Tate researchers who descend from Sarah/Sally Fortner and the other Samuel Tate. The following is an email I received from John Burdick several months ago:

Hi Les,
I corresponded with another descendant of this Samuel & Sally Fortner Tate, and we've concluded that the Samuel Tate who went to Alabama was a different one than the one who married Sally Fortner (real name Sarah Faulkner). This Samuel Tate, born 1776, died 1842/1844 in Marion Co., IL. Wife Sarah/Sally Faulkner died 1853 in Bond Co IL at home of daughter Sarah Tate Mattingly. Details on Samuel & Sally Faulkner/Fortner came from a biographical write up in Bond Co IL of Sarah Tate Mattingly's husband. I descend from Samuel & Sally's son, Samuel Tate Jr. Samuel & Sally married in Stokes Co NC moved to Maury Co TN ca. 1812, and then to Marion Co IL ca. 1830. We think the Samuel Tate who went to Alabama may perhaps be related (a cousin perhaps) but we can't find a connection right now. His wife was Sarah, but not Sarah Fortner/Faulkner, as previously presumed.

My Samuel Tate (1776-1844) was son of Robert Tate (ca. 1740-ca. 1781) and wife Rachel Owen (ca. 1750-1797). They had 5 children - Owen (ca. 1772-1827); Elizabeth (ca. 1774-?); Samuel; Robert (ca. 1778-ca. 1830); & Rachel (1780-1858).

Sincerely,

John Burdick
