I discovered this 1848 Tax List in the Bibb County Courthouse in the summer of 2000. To the best of my ability I have abstracted information that might be of help to other researchers. I have attempted to retain the original spelling. It is difficult to be certain as to spelling/writing of "A" and "O", "I" and "J", and "S" and "L", etc. Keep this in mind as you look through this publication.
Please remember that the land descriptions are incomplete and often inaccurate. Read the last two pages of this publication for a better understanding of the problem with the land descriptions.
The State of Alabama, Bibb County
At a Special Setting of the County Court of commission of Roads and
Revenue of Bibb County began and held at the Court house in
Centreville on the 22nd day of April in the year of our Lord one
thousand Eight hundred and forty Eight, the Honorable William C. Henry
Judge together with Charles P. Fendley, Henley G. Snead, and David L.
Brown Commissioners who took their seates and entered upon the
discharge of their duties.
It is ordered by the Court that the County of Bibb be laid off into
three assessment districts in conformity of the Law to provide for the
assessment and collection of Taxes approved March 6th 1848.
It is further ordered by the court that all of Bibb County lying West
of Cahawba River constitute the first assessment District of said
county and that all that part of said county lying of [sic] the
Cahawba River between the Road now known as the New State Road or
Mahun Road from when said Road leaves the Shelby County Line along
said Road to when it intersects the old State Road thence Down old
State Road By way of Robert Griffins then on to the Perry County Line
near Brodnaxes old place constitute the second assessment District and
that all of said county Lying East of the said New State Road or Mahan
Road and the old State Road constitute the third assessment District
of said county.
It was then ordered by the court that this court adjourn to the first
Monday in May next to meet at that time for the purpose of Electing a
county assessor and then District assessor for the county of Bibb.
