Ruthie and Hiram were married in 1834 believing his divorce from Celey was final.

The divorce was finally granted by the legislature in I think 1838. It's listed on Lisa Franklin's Tracking Your Roots Web Site under DIVORCES GRANTED BY THE LEGISLATURE. I need to go back and check the year.

Hiram thought when the Courts of Bibb Co. granted his divorce that this was all he needed. So, he and Ruthie were married. When he found out the divorce was granted by the legislature, he and Ruthie already had 2 children. To make sure they could inherit from his estate he went through the legal process of adopting his own children. He and Ruthie also went through a 2nd marriage ceremony and that's why there are 2 records of the marriage.

From reading the divorce proceedings in the Bibb Co. Courthouse it appears that Celey became sick shortly after the birth of their daughter. I'm not sure from the records exactly what type of sickness she developed but it caused the loss of her sight. She could not care for herself, her child, nor Hiram and asked to be taken to her parents. He took her. At some point they must have moved because the court was not able to find her to serve some papers about court hearings and proceedings. Celey had originally asked for alimony. The request was denied. From what I read, I'm not sure she ever really appeared in court. She may have gone into a severe mental depression. I'm not sure where she died or when. Hiram was left with an infant to take care of. From what little knowledge I've gained of Isaac Parker, I don't think he would have continued to have business dealings with Hiram Elam if he thought Hiram was not "fit" to become a member of his family.

By asking me those questions, you reminded me that I never did get around to checking the census information for John Elam who was in Tusc., Bibb and I think Dallas Cos. I think he was a brother to Hiram. Also there was at least one female in Tusc. Co. that may be a sister. Then there's that marriage of a Henry Elam in early Bibb that I can't figure out how he connects but is possibly another brother of Hiram's. If I didn't send you some of those marriage records, let me know and I'll hunt them up. Will also try to check that census for John. A lot of TN census records are missing but the best I can remember at the moment I think there were ELAM's in Bedford, Rutherford, and Gibson Cos.

"October the 16th 1871. Mr. Gardner. I Authorize you to let my Son Henry have License and this will be your Safe guard in so doing. yours truly Ruth Elam" (signature).

Bond signed by Henry Elum and William Avery dated 16 Oct. 1871. Henry Elum made his mark. Wm Avery signed his name. License issued 16 Oct. 1871. I did not find a return, which may be the reason I've never been able to find the marriage recorded in the Marriage Records.

As per Ola Deason Meadows, 5/22/97. This is only part of what she sumitted for the Bibb Co. Heritage Book.

Grandpa and Grandma Elam lived at Brent in south Bibb County near the Perry County line. Grandpa Elam was a stout, robust man with a hearing problem. We had to speak loudly to him. I think that he just ignored us many times and continued to smoke his pipe. He sat in his curved-back, homemade chair and relished his pipe as if the whole wide world was at peace. Grandpa had a thick thatch of gray hair, shaggy eye brows and did not talk a lot. He seemed gruff at times. Underneath the appearance, he was a kind old grandpa. Grandma Elam was a gentle woman. She was very small and never reached 100 pounds in weight. She was called Sis or Sally. I remember that she fried homecured ham for breakfast and the coffee was made from coffee beans ground in the kitchen. The collard greens that she cooked were the very best. Her old safe held a batch of pies, cookies and leftovers.

Grandma Elam was born on December 12, 1852, died at the age of 83 in 1935 and was buried at Little Hope Church Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama. My sisters and I visited Grandpa after the death of Grandma and he searched throughout the house for articles to give us in remembrance of Grandma. He gave me one of her little blouses. Three years later Grandpa, who was born on December 17, 1854, died at the age of 84. He wanted to be buried at home in his field but the decision was made to bury him next to Grandma. Five of their offsprings are also buried at Little Hope Cemetery.

Centreville Press, Thursday, May 5, 1938, West Eoline News.

Mr. Henry H. Elam of near Elam School died last Wednesday and the funeral was held at Little Hope Church on last Friday. Elder O. M. Streetman of Birmingham officiating. Interment is in the adjoining cemetery. Gillespie in charge.

14. PAUL EDWIN4 ELAM (JOHN MONROE3, HIRAM2, JOHN S.1) was born March 27, 1883 in Bibb County, Alabama, and died April 01, 1963 in Harmony ,Mississippi Clark County. He married TENNIE VIOLA PENNINGTON.

Notes for PAUL EDWIN ELAM:
My name is Bryan O'Neil and I am the great grandson of Paul Edwin Elam. My cousin, Henry Elam, found your post on a geneology board and thought I might be the person that you would want to talk with. A bit about myself and how I tie into the Elam family. My grandmother was the daughter of Paul Edwin and Tennie Pennington Elam. Mr. Paul's father, John Monroe Elam, as you may know, a resident of Bibb County Alabama until the Civil War. At that time he enlisted in the 20th Ala. Infantry. His unit fought at the seige of Vicksburg. I have copies of several letters that he wote home to Bibb county just before the seige and I have located the exact spot (using information from his letters) where he fought at Vicksburg. This spot is in the military park that is now there.

After the war, John settled around Meridian, Mississippi in the Mehan Junction community. He is buried in the Goodwater Cemetary there. Two of his sons, John and Paul, bought land in the Harmony community outside of Quitman, Mississippi. I currently live on Mr. Paul's homestead. In fact, I was working on the barn he built when Henry told me about you. Please respond soon because we would LOVE to have you at the anual Elam Family Reunion that we hold every June in Clarkco Park outside of Quitman. Sincerely. Bryan O'Neil

Notes for MARION HUEY DEASON:
May have established the first store in Brent. In 1900 he was listed as Brent Agent for Tuscaloosa Cotton Seed Oil Co. He edited and published "Eoline Messenger." Also owned a farm and at one time ran the mail route from Slick Hill to Tuscaloosa. He was a traveling peddler when he met Dorothy as a child. He and family moved to Colorado for his health at one time but later moved back to Bibb Co., AL, where he died at the age of 39 of TB.

Some information on this family furnished by Barry Hocutt, Birmingham, AL, and Delores Deason Goin, Birmingham, AL.

Delores has a copy of the Blocton Enterprise for West Blocton, AL, v. 6, no. 2, dated Aug 10, 1911, which mentions the death of M. H. Deason that was on AUGUST 8, 1911.

The Blocton Enterprise, West Blocton, AL, v. 6, no. 2, August 10, 1911: Death of M. H. Deason. We are informed that Mr. M. H. Deason, of Eoline, died at his home there Tuesday. Mr. Deason started the publication of the Eoline Messenger some time ago, but his failing health caused him to give it up and go west. It seems as if he returned home to die after having gotten no benefit from his trip. He has a brother, James Deason, at this place. He leaves a family all of whome have the deepest sympathy.

Diary of Wiley E. Deason also gives death date of M. H. Deason as August 8, 1911, and states that he was buried on August 9, 1911. Date on his tombstone is incorrect.

Birth and death dates are from tombstones in Little Hope Cemetery, Bibb Co., AL.
