The Fancher Family book attributes John of MS and James of AL as sons of Benjamin.

This is an error made by the compiler of the book after the death of W. H. Fancher........ W. H. Fancher's records show them to be grandsons of Benjamin.

Richard Fancher was born April 19, 1767 and was in Tennessee at an early age when East Tennessee was truly a frontier.

Local historians of Sevier Co., TN place him on the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River in Sevier Co. by 1790, maybe earlier in the area now known as Pigeon Forge.

He received a grant for land where the town of Pigeon Forge is now located.

He signed a deposition concerning the death of settler (Thomas Black) in December, 1795 and he appeared on a list of electors by 1796.

In 1796 he appeared on petition to the General Assembly about obtaining land which he occupied.

Richard and his wife (Mary) were members of the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River Baptist Church by September 5, 1803.

In October 1812, he was on a church committee to repair the meeting house.

He, his wife and daughter-in-law were granted letters of dismission in August, 1815 when he probably moved to the Mississippi Territory in that part that was later to become Bibb Co., AL.

The 1816 census off Monroe Co., Mississippi Territory shows Richard and 9 children with son (James) living nearby.

The 1830 and 1840 census shows him in Bibb Co.,

In 1825, he was appointed an Overseer of the poor in one district of Bibb Co.

Richard died August 21, 1849 in Bibb Co., AL and is buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church, Carleton Hill, which he and 10 others founded in 1817.

Mary, his widow, died in 1856 when the final settlement of his will was filed in Bibb Co.

Richard's will shows he had accumulated much wealth for those days as a farmer and gave his children - order uncertain.

Notes and Info -

Early histories say that Alabama was settled by former soldiers of Andrew Jackson who saw the fertile land as they passed through on their march to New Orleans and returned home in the War of 1812.

John and James served from East TN and probably urged their father to make the move.

Richard probably made an exploratory trip to Alabama to look over the country before making his decision as the family says there were trips back and forth between Alabama and TN.

------------------------------------

Aug., 1993

There has been some discussion for several months (generated by the remark of Paul Fancher) that James and Richard were brothers and not father and son.

Mrs. Nobles (after considerable time) has come to the following conclusion:

I believe James F. married a Haggard - is the son of Richard. He's always in Bibb with Richard and Henry Haggard. I'm comfortable with that and hope you are.

Now, what other James of that generation there might be I don't know. Nor do I know for sure that John F. with a Haggard wife is brother of James or what.

These various people say so. There is evidence - both have Haggard wives. They show up in Ala. same time as Richard. John named oldest son Richard. First dau. (Dolly) and 2nd son (Henry) that takes care of family names.

My problem is - the other John you have and the fact that my Jon's birth date is always given as 1782 TN. His census ages agree with that.

Now - Richard b. 1767 and his wife (Mary,b.1776) would have been 15 years and 6 years old when my John F. was born, either Richard had a wife before Mary or this whole thing don't add. This theory needs work.

This is what you show on other John. What are your sources and references?

b. 1792 TN

m. 1823 Fanny Murrah in Bibb Co. & Noxubee Co., MS

Our John was only John I found in Noxubee of this age bracket. He died there in 1864. Could your info on death be mixed?

Under your John you listed 1850 census Noxubee, p. 230. Do you have this reading?

I have my John as family, #586 and the reading. I'll check to see if the one as Family 586 is on page you gave for your John. I suspect they will be the same John. We'll see, you.

Also, say John and wife (Fanny), mentioned in "Richard's will as being in MS 1856". I've a copy of will and Probate Court record but didn't see that. Can you tell me about where to look or send me a copy of that area.

I know I'm a pill but with so many same name and nearly same age, I just have to be thoroughly convinced who's who. Thanks for all the census, etc. I'm trying to place them in to your work - where they fit.

This is my thought -

if the John in Richard's will is said to be of MS and at the same time as our John and there is no evidence of another John there (can't find any) then I'll accept our John as son of Richard and shut up.....

Love,

Pinney

1850 census - Bibb Co., AL (found in the Centreville Library)

(see Elijah Fancher for complete census)

Family #1146

Francher, Emely 37 f 3000 GA

Also included in this family was -

Fancher, Mary 77 f PA

She would have been born in 1773 to have been 77 in 1850; however, her tombstone reads d-02-19-1853 77 yrs. which would make her born in 1776. Need to check this - I don't think it could have been another Mary. She probably moved in with Emily to help with the family and then moved on to Talladega with daughter Nancy.

**Notes for Richard Fancher:

Notes for Mary:

The 1850 Census of Bibb Co. shows Mary Fancher - female - age 77 - born in Pennsylvania living with Emily Carleton Fancher, who was the widow of Elijah Fancher.
