Thomas W. Colbert

Submitted by Kim Morris

He was the son of John D. and Mahala Howard Colbert. He was killed in Action at Gettysburg. Here is a couple of Military Civil War application, came from the Alabama Department of Archives.

Also I have a picture of a chalk Slate that was made by Mahala's brother, William Washington Colbert given to Thomas. Sometime before Mahala died, She had given the slate to her grandson Luther C. Colbert, Sr., then he gave it to his son Luther C. Colbert, Jr. ... then he gave it to his son who has it today. Inscription on the chalk slates of Thomas W. Colbert. It reads: "Bought by T. W. Colbert 1855 from W. M. Howard, Tuskaloosa Co. Alabama." Another inscription along the long side reads: "Presented to L. C. Colbert by Mahala Colbert his gramie" After the word "gramie" there is a Ma or a Mu, I'm not sure which.
