1848 Tax List - District 2

The State of Alabama, Bibb County

At a special setting of the Judge of Bibb County Court together with the Commissioners of Roads and Revenue for the purpose of examining and correcting the assessment.

Registers as Returned by the County Assessor began and held at the Court house in and for said County on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in August it being the Seventh day of said month presents the Honorable Williams Caddell Judge of Bibb County Court together with John A. Woods, Charles P. Findley, Henley G. Snead and David L. Brown as commissioners.

It is ordered by the Court that the Court adjourn until tomorrow morning nine o'clock. The Court next pursuant to adjournment present as above.

The Court then proceeded to the Examination of the Tax Books returned by the county assessor for the year 1849 and find that the Books are correct but some discrepancy in the valuation of some real estate as follows (viz) the Real Estate of Elijah Parnell was raised in valuation from fifteen hundred to Twenty four hundred dollars and the valuation of Robert R. Peoples Real Estate was Raised from Eighteen hundred to three Thousand Dollars and the Real Estate of John Steel valuation raised from one thousand and seventy seven dollars to thirteen hundred Dollars and upon the Representation of the County assessor that Andrew Woolley and Pleasant Hill have failed or Refused to give a list of their taxable property as Required By Law after being Legally notifyed upon the Best information produced by the County Assessor it is considered and agreed that the assessor Enter a Tax again P. Hill to the amount of Eighteen Dollars and that Andrew Woolley be taxed the sum of Twenty Seven Dollars and 37 ½ cents and also the Real Estate of N. B. Coker the valuation was Raised from Twenty five hundred Dollars to Thirty five hundred Dollars.

It is ordered by the Court that there be levied collected and accounted for as a County Tax the sum of forty percent on all the items of property and things subject to Taxation in the County of Bibb under the act of the General Assembly of the State of Alabama to provide for the assessment and collection of the Taxes of said State approved the 6th of March A.D. 1848 as a county Tax for the year 1849 with the Exception of marriage License and the fifty cents Required by said act on other License and the seal of the Clerk of said county But this Exception is not to prohibit the collection of the County Tax on all the License Required by said act and that no money will be received for the county Tax except gold and silver and the notes of the Bank of the State of Alabama and its Branches and the notes of Special paying Banks of said State and the Tax Collector is Required to Collect and pay over into the County Treasurer of Bibb County all the Taxes Due said County on or Before the fifteenth Day of December next and that the Clerk is Required to furnish __?__ W. Hayes Tax Collector of said County with a copy of this order.

The State of Alabama, Bibb County

At a Special Setting of the Judge of the County Court and Commissioners of Roads and Revenue under a provision of the Revenue Law approved the Sixth Day of March A. D. 1848 for the purpose of Comparing and Equalizing the assessment on Real Estate in said County Began at the Court house in and for said County on the second Monday in August A. D. 1849. It Being the thirteenth day of said month and continued from day to day untill Friday the Seventeenth of said month Being five days present the Honorable Williams Caddell Judge Together with David L. Brown, Charles P. Findley Henley G. Snead and, Jno A. Woods Commissioners and after a thorough comparison of the assessement List and Books of Assessment find the Books Generally correct. But in the Numbers and subdivisions of the Land given in the assessment List there are many errors. Different persons giving in the same nos of Land. The Books of the County assessor is generally correct and received by the Court to be copied.
