DEDMAN, James Monroe., Col. (James Monroe Dedman, my 2nd gr-grandfather was born in 1826 in  Mecklenburg County, VA, moved to Maury County, TN, with his family in the mid-1830s, then to Selma, AL about 1847.  Before the war he was an auctioneer/blacksmith.  After the war he owned the St. James Hotel in Selma where he was elected Mayor in 1870.  He died in Selma in 1886.  He was wounded and captured at Vicksburg; paroled, wounded a second time at Nashville, and surrendered to Sherman's Army after the Battle of Bentonville, NC, the last major engagement of the war.  At the time of surrender, the Twentieth Alabama had fewer than 100 troops who were able to fight. - James M.
