SOURCE: Claude B SLATON- Clinton, LA. Only one census record, universally mistranscribed as A M STATON, shows up in 1860 Kemper Co MS. Historian Claude B SLATON, a direct descendant, has worked on this line for over twenty years without finding Augustus Marion SLATON'S father. Family stories that Augustus Marion was a stowaway on a ship from Ireland, while a commonplace among American families, take on some strength in the absence of anything else, especially considering the number of Irish regiments raised by both sides during the Civil War, a direct result of the Potato Famine.

He was buried about 19 Dec 1944 in Porterville, Kemper Co, MS.¹ William Scott SLATON was crippled by something called "Jake Leg" which was caused by drinking an alcoholic beverage that was "Home Brewed" by a friend and it was contaminated in some way. He was paralized for a while in 1930. Four years later, he began doing a lot of things on his own. Although he couldn't walk, he did build a riding cultivator to be pulled by horses. He could sit and operate this unique machine with his hands and cultivate 28 1/2 acres of land. In addition to this, he has built two houses, barns, fences and a blacksmith shop. He said "My mammy used to tell me that where there is a will. there is a way." He explained that "I guess, by gosh, that is why they named me Will." He farmed all his life, but also did blacksmithing for neighbors. He was a remarkable man by any standards!

He was married to Martha Luella "Ella" KENT (daughter of Ephreme Henry KENT and Martha Ann ANDERSON) on 8 Sep 1903 in Kemper Co, MS. She died on 13 Jan 1982 in Sucarnoochee, Kemper Co, MS.
