I am trying to follow unknown branches of my family and have found much activity (marriages and Civil War) in Sumter Co.  I know much about Henry Hillard Martin and his wife Elizabeth (Bettie) Bryant.  However, I lost three brothers of Henry; Simuel, Dave, and Millas.  The latter two were killed in the Civil War. I am assuming that since Henry signed up with Alabama 5th Inf, possibly brothers did also.  I'm currently awaiting muster rolls, but I didn't see them on the Livingston Monument list.   Also, found a "Lietenant JW "Dick" Bryant" on Muster and wondered if he was related to Alexander Clinton Bryant of Sumter Co (the father of Elizabeth). I have reviewed a pension request submitted by my great grandfather,  Calvin A. Jones.  It indicates he enlisted in the 5th Ala regiment in Sumter county in 1861. I have not been able to find his name on any muster roll, but I do have sworn statements by 3 listed members (W. R. Deloach, James C. Arrington, J. H. Holmes) saying he was a member. All evidence is that C. A. Jones was a fine, brave solder. He was wounded several times and lost an arm. He was captured near Appomatox near the end and spent a very limited time held prisoner by what he called "the Federals". Robert H. Jones 6301 Camp Robinson Rd. Apt 155-B North Little Rock, AR 72118

Walter Newton Duke from Monroe County enlisted 15 March 1861. From pension record (Texas) the information is as follows:  W. N. Duke, Private, Old Company D and New Company C, 5th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted 15 March 1861, captured 4 July 1863, at Gettysburg, paroled 18 February 1865, at Point Lookout, Maryland. I found two of his brothers on the list. L. W. Duke (Lafayette Washington) and William J. Duke. They were the sons of Joel and Martha Duke. The Duke family lived at Buena Vista (post-office). The sons migrated to Texas.   Walter N. and William J. Duke are buried with Confederate Markers, at  Ramah Cemetery, Tenaha, Shelby County, Texas. Lafayette Washington Duke, a Baptist Minister, is buried in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.  Thanks, JYBL
