"Born on March 16, 1814, John was a native of Mecklenburg Co. NC. After a visit to Alabama in 1836, he moved to Uniontown in 1838, where he studied law under Col. Columbus W. Lea while teaching school. He was admitted to the bar in 1839, and practiced in Uniontown. In 1856, he moved to Selma, where he died in 1889."
