GAY

Sharon Sat Oct 4 2003
I am looking for information on Henry Mitchell Gay, born 03/09/1812 in Fayette Co., Ala.  Also his son, Thomas M. Gay, born 12/14/1851 in Ala.  I am actually trying to tie into my family history Thomas's daughter, Ladora (Dora) Gay, born about 1873.  I'd like to find out where she was born.  I know they moved to Texas.  They were in Palo Pinto Co, TX 1880 on the census.  And she was later in Red River Co in the 1900's.  Any information any one could supply would be greatly appreciated.

 STUDDARD •  HENDON •  GORDON  •  DICKSON

Ann S. Grainger Mon Oct 6 2003
Looking for additional information on descendents of JAMES STUDDARD (b. 13 Apr 1820, Laurens District, SC; d. 25 Apr 1900, Fayette Co., AL); and his first wife, ELIZABETH HENDON (b. 13 Apr 1831, Danville, Morgan Co., AL; d. 16 Aug 1861, Fayette Co., AL.  He was a son of SAMUEL STUDDARD and MALTA GORDON, "MARTHA"; and she was a daughter of WILLIAM HENDON and SARAH ANN DICKSON.  The 1850 US Census in Fayette Co., AL, indicated they were married within the past year (between late 1849 and early 1850), probably where her parents were living in Walker Co., AL.  Four surviving Issue were:
1) SAMUEL J. STUDDARD, b. Oct 1850, according to 1900 census (wrong date on his monument); d. 28 Sep 1918, Fayette Co., AL.  He married Mary Jane Stovall on 9 Sep 1871, Fayette Co, AL.
2) Martha Ann Studdard, b. 05 Sep 1853, Fayette Co., AL; d. 09 Sep 1935, Walker Co., AL.  She married William Jefferson (or Joseph) Franklin Strickland
3) Sarah Malissa Catherine Studdard, b. bet. 1858-1859, Fayette Co., AL; d. 23 Nov 1893.  She married 09 Apr 1882, Fayette Co., AL, to Henry Jefferson Owens
4) Elizabeth A. Studdard, b. 16 Aug 1861, Fayette Co., AL; d. 11 Sep 1878.  She married 1) John W. Shaw on 11 Sep 1878, Walker Co., AL, and 2) William Price Johnson, as his fourth wife, on 29 Nov 1883, Fayette Co., AL.

 STUDDARD • GORDON
ANSLEY (ENDSLEY) • RICHEY • BURNS

Ann S. Grainger Mon Oct 6 2003
SAMUEL STUDDARD, 1850 US Census, Fayette Co., AL, and his older brother, ANDREW STUDDARD, 1850 US Census, Laurens District, SC, married sisters so all of their children were double first cousins, almost genetically the same as brothers and sisters.  SAMUEL married MALTA GORDON, referred to as "MARTHA" in his War of 1812 Pension request.  ANDREW married MARY GORDON, "POLLY".  SAMUEL and ANDREW were the sons of DAVID STUDDARD and MARTHA ANSLEY (also spelled ENDSLEY).  MALTA and MARY were the daughters of ADAM GORDON and MARY RICHEY.  These marriages were confirmed in a court case in South Carolina, where MARY RICHEY GORDON and her married children were involved in a lawsuit.  MALTA's name was clearly stated several times in the lawsuit with this spelling.  MALTA and MARY had a sister, NELLY, and brother's, JAMES and JOHN GORDON.  NELLY married JOSIAH S. BURNS.  Who did JAMES and JOHN GORDON marry?  They had left the district at the time of the lawsuit.

Both SAMUEL and MALTA and ANDREW and MARY named a son, ADAM STUDDARD, SAMUEL's son, not surviving to adulthood and ANDREW's son, surving to adulthood, but dying fairly young.  Has anyone figured who the parents of ADAM GORDON might be?  I have his land records and am beginning to suspect that he was not related to the JOHN GORDON family, but might have been related to a NATHANIEL GORDON who lived nearby.  How?  MARY RICHEY was born in Northern Ireland, the daughter of JOHN RICHEY and wife, MARGARET, immigrants from Northern Ireland.  I have posted JOHN RICHEY's will on the Laurens Co., SC, USGenWeb page.  He died shortly after the family came to America.

SMITH • SIMS • RILEY

Eddy A. Flick Tue Oct 28 2003
I am looking for any connections to my Great-Grandfather, James A. SMITH.  He was born 23 February 1812 either in Georgia or South Carolina.  He married twice, first to Mahulda SIMS by whom he had five children.  This marriage was in Franklin County, GA, 2 January 1840.  After Mahulda's death he married my maternal grandmother Melissa RILEY by whom he had 5 children also -- one son being my Grandfather, Alfred Matthew "Mack" SMITH, who was born 28 July 1857.  James lived in Franklin, Jackson, Hall and Polk counties in Georgia before coming to Fayette County between 1857-1860.  James was in the home guard militia and may have died of an injury received in the war.  He died 24 March 1865.  I'd like to know if there are connections with other SMITH families from Fayette County?
