DHildebrand Sun, 06 Jul 1997 12:01:53
Researching the family of William Jones who was a Baptist Preacher in Fayette Co. 1850's.  He had at least one child: Thomas Bradley Jones who married Mary Elizabeth Roberts and had 3 children born in FayetteCo., before moving to Texas.  The oldest of these 3 children was Glen Jones b.1888 (my line).  Looking for any connections/information on these Jones.  Thanks for any help you might have.

BAKER • BANNISTER • APPLING

J. BAKER Mon, 14 Jul 1997 15:57:47
Trying to find a connection to the Baker families who were in Alabama prior to Civil War and after.  OSCAR Baker was my Grandfather.  He came to Texas with brothers RICHARD, HOLLIE and a sister, KATE.  Their father was MARSHALL BAKER.  OSCAR married Minnie Ola BANNISTER whose family was from Alabama as well.  Any help locating ancestors would be appreciated.  A Mary APPLING also married a JAMES Baker who lived near Tuscaloosa, their fourth child was MARSHALL, who was my Great Grandfather.  He was born in 1851 and died in 1902.  Any further information will greatly be appreciated.

LONG • HENDERSON • BERRY

John Long Tue, 15 Jul 1997 13:06:27
I am searching for the birth place of my great grandfather, William L. Long.  All the ancestors on my father's side came from Fayette County.  Many were born there, but William L. Long was born in an unknown location in South Carolina before moving to Fayette.  I have censuses of Fayette County that put him there as a lad and he was living with some Berrys, his mother having remarried into that family.  His birth parents' names were William B. Long and Frances E. Henderson.  Frances is buried in Fayette.  I don't know much about William B.  All I know about him is that he was born in Georgia.

My great great grand father, John H. Berry, was born in Fayette Sept. 29, 1827 and died in Burnet County, Texas, on Oct. 6, 1904.  My great grandfather, William L. Long, moved to Burnet County, Texas in 1867 with a group of Berrys.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Berry, eldest child of George Rufus Berry, the leader of the group that moved to Burnet Co.  George Rufus, the son of Fayette County pioneer William C. Berry, was born in Fayette County Feb. 29, 1828.  Sarah Elizabeth was born in Fayette County in Mar. 18, 1851.

Please forgive me for rambling around like this. I am sure it is evident that I am new to the genealogy game and I am not really organized.  At least I hope you can tell that I am enthusiastic, if not knowledgeable.

I would give anything for a lead on William L. or William B. Long's places of birth.  Unfortunately, neither of them were born in Alabama.  John H. Long - Port Richey, FL

CRANFORD • PAPAZIAN (PAPAZAN)

Amy M. Cranford Tue, 15 Jul 1997 23:16:07
I am looking for any information on the Cranford and Papazian families that were in Fayette County in the 1850's and 1860's.  Amy Cranford lived in Fayette County in the 1860's.  She had 3 children: David, William, and Martha.  They were born in Pike County, Alabama, and appear on the 1850 Census.  David married Mary Papazian before the war.  Her family appears on the 1860 Census in Fayette.  Her parents were L.P. and Nancy.  She had eight brothers and sisters.  David Cranford and Mary's brother Isaac enlisted in the 41st Alabama Infantry, Company G, on May 29, 1862.  David and Mary moved to Grant County, Arkansas around 1870.  I am looking for any information that I can get, especially who Amy Cranford was married to.  Thanks.

Harriet McAlister Sat, 19 Jul 1997 10:12:42
I am a Holland-Davis decendent.  My ggrandfather was William Thomas Holland he married Sarah Jane Davis daughter of John Hawkins Davis and Nancy Gore Franklin.  The Davis and Franklin lines are fairly easy to trace...DAR...and work done by Jeannie Newell and her family etc.  BUT my Holland line is another thing.  William came from Pickens Co. AL he was born there in 1827.  That's where the story ends.  Can you help shed any light on the ilusive Hollands.  I have the centenial newspapers, and I see that you have left W.T. off of most of your pre-civil war lists even though he is a cobbler in Fayette.  In business and doing well in 1851.  His partners were J.S. King, Thomas King, and James Keenum, listed were also some slaves.  W.T. recieves a land grant in Gilpen in 1858.  Found in the 1860 census with his wife Sarah and daughter Nancy. Family says he served in the Civil war; if he did I can not find him.  Not even in the National Archives.  I do have his Mexican War records.  Any help you could be would be great.  You are doing a wonderful job on this page.  Harriet Holland McAlister

Jorene Orr Tue, 22 Jul 1997 16:00:00
RE: Col. Joseph A. McClure dob 16 Jul 1810 d 2 Nov 1855 unable to serve out term of commissioner.  The obituary shows he died of flux.  His wife was Patience Elizabeth McClain.  Their children were: Martha A. McClure, 23 Jan 1837; Thomas Mitchell Christopher Columbus Adolphus B. Hungate Henry Clay [sic].

It is said that their daughter married a man (I don't have his name before me) that designed and perhaps oversaw the construction of the Fayette County Courthouse.  It is also noted that Col. McClure commanded a regiment in the Mexican War. I was told their marriage was in the US Genweb, but spelled incorrectly.  The family is trying to document the Regiment in the war.  I have contacted a man in Texas to see if he has anything.  Should you run across anything on Joseph A. McClure would you please keep my email address and let me know.  I appreciate all of your hard work.  It shows!!

I am looking for information on the Wells family.  My greatgrandfather was Joe Wells who married Rosie Miller.  He is buried in Hatley, MS, in Monroe County.  I know very little about his family.  It is thought that the family was traveling to Texas and maybe Joe met and married Rosie and stayed in Monroe County.  If anyone has any information I would appreciate hearing from you.  My grandfather's name was Chester A. Wells, who lived and died in Itawamba County, MS.  His brothers were Bud and Jack Wells.  Jack is still living in Hatley, MS.  Thanks.

Hillary E. Wright Thu, 24 Jul 1997 13:30:11 -0700
I am researching the Wright, Nelson, Johnson, Crow, Strickland, Logan, Caraway, Abernathy, Plyer and Freeman families in Fayette AL from 1830 to present.  My GGG-GF was Henry WRIGHT who married Susan Ashcraft.  I am looking information on Henry's brothers and sisters and mother and father.  One of his sisters was Martha Wright who married William O Strickland in Jackson County, GA.  Another sister may have been Catherine Wright who married Lewis Crow in Jackson County GA in 1817.  Henry's father may have been John Wright.  His brother is thought to be Michael Wright who married Pennie Poe Nall.  Henry had a brother or cousin who was his partner named William H Wright.  Henry also had a brother named Jesse who married Elizabeth.

I am also looking for and have information on James JOHNSON who married Ann Wright.  James's father was Starling or Sterling Johnson, who moved to back to White County GA after Fayette around 1872.  Starling married Becky Crow, daughter of Lewis Crow and Catherine Wright Crow.

I am looking for information on Rev. Miles J Abernathy family who came from Rome, GA during or after the Civil war.

I have information on the Dock Plyler who married Nancy Moore and on Nancy Belk.

I am looking for the parents of William Jefferson Nelson who married Talitha Jane Ray.  Talitha was the daughter of Lucy Ann Wright and Elijah Ray.  Lucy was the dau of Jessee and Elizabeth Wright.  Jessee was Henry Wright's older brother.  Jeff Nelson had brothers named Jasper and Silvester.  Oral family history has it that their parents died young and they were raised by William or George and Martha Berry.

Other allied families are Ashcraft, Owens, Appling, Lindsey, Freeman, Henry, Moore and Holliman.  Also, I have a little information on Blakeney, Poe and Nall.

Any information on any names mention above would be appreciated.  If you need information on any of these please contact me.

DAVIS • FRANKLIN

In the list of those buried in the Hopewell Primitive Baptist cemetery is this entry: "Nancy Gore Franklin Davis, wife of John Hawkins Davis -- b. 25 Aug 1807 -- d. 24 Aug 1867 (buried in northeast section - grave unmarked."  This raises two very puzzling questions for me, and I would be grateful for any light that anyone might be able to shed on the mystery.
• If the grave is unmarked, what is the reason for believing that she is buried there?
John Hawkins Davis is identified as a minister in the obituary of his son-in-law, and as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church in the census of 1860.  In the Methodist Archives, however, there is no record of a John Hawkins Davis.  Why would the wife of a Methodist minister be buried in a Baptist cemetery?  Could he possibly have been a Baptist minister.  Does anyone know how I might go about finding out?  What are the sources for information on the Baptist church in Alabama?

Dallas Johnson Sat, 26 Jul 1997 18:34:56
I am looking for the decendants of Starling Johnson and Rebecca Ann Crow.  I am interested in any information on the Johnson, Crow(e), Bascomb, Glover, Wright, Hughes, Wilson, Owen(s) and Plyler families.  Starling Johnson and his brothers and cousins settled Pilgrim's Rest in the 1840's.  Other relatives had already settled in Fayette prior to that time in the Fowler area.  Any information, no matter how trivial it may seem may help.  I have found the Ashcraft family who are related to the Crow family in Arkansas.  The names are Lemuel Johnson, Starling Johnson b: 1819 in S.C., son James M. Johnson, son Starling Johnson, Wilford, Rowland, Philip, Willis, John, Elara, Polly (Wilson) Johnson.  I am also searching the Johnsons from around Fowler's Corner: Price M., Hezakiah, Ruebin, and so on.  Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to furnish.

I'm trying to find info about Thomas Poe and his son R.H. Poe.  Thomas' father, Maj James R Poe, fought in the American Revolution and moved to Fayette Co. late in life around 1823 and is buried there.  I believe Thomas Poe died prior to the Civil War.  R.H. Poe may have been the Roza H Poe who was sheriff 1840-43.  I've also read his name was Richard Hampton Poe.  He and many other Poe family members migrated to Arkansas in the 1850's.  Please let me know if you have any info. Lee Woodham

McCAIN

Charles McCain Wed, 13 Aug 1997 16:51:42
The AL 1830 Census says a John McCain (#197) lived in Fayette Co. in 1830.  Do any of your county historical records show him and especially members of this family?  Also, the 1820-29 and the 1830-39 AL Decennary Census Index has the phrase "SEARCH VITAL RECORDS" followed by a date.  What does this mean, that is if you know?  Thank you.  Charles McCain ~ Denison, TX

LAWRENCE

Chris Lawrence Sat, 23 Aug 1997 23:45:39
It appears that the Lawrence's of Fayette county are an off-shoot of the Lawrence's of Morgan County, with Bartholomew Lawrence possibly being the progenitor of this line.  I particular I am trying to establish what the relationship was between Alexander Lawrence (born 1802) and Richard Lawrence (possibly his father) and Bartholomew Lawrence (listed in 1850 Fayette census, born around 1760!!) and get a good track on the early Lawrence's of Fayette county so I can complete my work on the Lawrence's of Morgan County.  Has anyone done any work on the Fayette County Lawrence's?  Chris Lawrence ~ Arlington, VA

JOHNSON • MELTON

Dallas Johnson Mon, 25 Aug 1997 20:53:18
I am sending you a picture of William Franklin Johnson [see Fayette Family Records] who owned a store and a cotton mill at one time in Fayette.  He is the son of James M. Johnson.  Married Nora Melton.  They moved to Denver Colorado for Nora's health in 1920.  He died in 1944 and she died in 1984.

Now my inquiry:

Starling Johnson settled in the Pilgrims Rest area of Fayette County, Alabama in the 1840's.  Surounding his land was the land belonging to Lemuel Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, James and John Johnson.  Starling Johnson was married to first Rebecca Ann Crow and their children were:

William L. Johnson b: 1842 d: June 15th, 1864 21st Al CSA in Virginia.

James M. Johnson b: 1844

John Johnson b: 1846

Mary Catherine Johnson, M: William B. Owens, b: 1849

Robert B. Johnson b: 1854

Starling Johnson b: 1850

Saville (Dillie & Villie) Johnson M: Bloomer Griffin, b: 1861. Married Second, Hariet C. Hughes Hamby. It is said that she was an orphan because her father Hughes died and left her mother and two daughters. She was raised in her grandfather Wilsons home so therefore her mother must have been a Wilson. She married John Hamby and they had a son named William (Billy) Hamby. John and Billy died. I don't know how.

Starling Johnson's first wife Rebecca Ann Crow died a few months after giving birth to Saville Johnson.  Later, Starling married Harriet C. Hughes Hamby.  They had two boys: Julius Glover Johnson and Drury Bascomb Johnson.  In 1873, Starling, Hariet, Julius, Drury and Saville left Fayette and came back to Georgia.  They lived with relatives in Georgia for five years then purchased land from William Saterfield in White County, Georgia.  Later, Saville (Villie) returned to Fayette Alabama where she lived out her life.  She, it is told, moved into the home of Mary Ann Crow.

William F. Johnson one of the sons of James M. Johnson visited the Johnsons in White county Georgia many times.  There was much correspondence.  Then the correspondence stopped around the time William F. and Nora moved to Colorado.

I am interested in finding any descendants of the family of Starling and Rebecca.  I would like to learn more about all the associated families.  If you have information or are a decendant and would like to learn more about the family, please write.

I have heard from many of you because of another inquiry that I made.  I will share with you and the people of Fayette the information I have gathered and will gather.

HANDLEY (HANLY) (HANDLY)

Ellie Handley Sat, 30 Aug 1997 23:49:40
I don't know where you got your information, listed under "Adults Living in Fayette County Prior to Civil War" [now Soldiers, Statesmen & Scalawags].  It is wrong.  I would strongley recommend you remove it, ASAP.  Under James (name spelling is wrong) Handley (Hanly) (Handly) served in the union Army is correct, however he did not desert, and a matter of record he was in the Hospital when his unit was moved.  Also, his date of birth is 1840.  He had two brothers who were in the same unit, William Payton Handley and Irvin Handley.  Irvin was killed at the battle of Shiloh in Tenn.  I don't see any of that on your web-site.  Is it because they were in the Union Army!  James Handley was my ggGrandfather and I want that off, and I will return to check on it.

From Carolyn: I am only trying to put on the Internet information that I have from the sources I have acquired over the years.  Your anger really is misplaced, since all the work I have put into this site is totally voluntary to help those doing research in Fayette County.  Sometimes mistakes will be made, and I try to correct them when possible.  This information came from the source listed below.  However, in an effort to correct this matter, I am removing the "Handley" from Pre-Civil War People, and printing this retraction so everyone will know why.

In doing my Lucas geneology, I am missing the son of Charles Daniel Lucas (1770-1853), who was also the father of John H. Lucas (1848-1939).  John was the husband of Rhoda (1855-1933).  I think Charles Daniel Lucas may have been the father of John, but this conflicts with a bible record.

NOTICE of the NEW Heritage of Fayette Co. book that is in progress.  I am the Chairman of the committee and we need all the articles we can get on families that lived in Fayette Co.  I am sure you are probably familiar with these books as they are doing one in Etowah county now.  If your ancestors were in the county before 1870 you are allowed 1000 words and 2 stories (1000 each) and 2 pictures.  If after 1870, half that amount of both.  I am very excited about this project.  Even though we have the 3 histories there still needs to be something on the family histories I believe.  If you could post this and put my email address I could send them a brochure when they are printed (hopefully we will have them the first week of Oct.).

"Thanks"

Carolyn, I just wanted to send you a note of thanks for the Fayette Co. Page.  You have done a terrific job and everybody needs to be told so once in a while.  I don't know how you find the time to enter all this data, but I for one am grateful for it. Thanks again.

Fayette County Research • ORR (ORE) (ARR)

Terry Gill Fri, 26 Sep 1997 20:17:42
Could you give me a guiding hand.  I'm researching Fayette County before 1850.  I've read that the court house burnt twice.  No early records available.  Also, no newspapers.  I'm writing letters to find the early church records.  I'm trying to research the Orr/Ore/Arr families that were there in 1830 & 1840.  I know you are very busy, but any suggestions would be grealty appreciated.  I live in Louisiana and would love to travel there to research. Is there a library in the area with early records?  Thanks, Terry Gill

From Carolyn: The library is pretty good, but only has books.  The best records are in the courthouse. What newspapers that remain are in there.  They also have a room just for researchers who want to go through the old records.  When I'm doing research in Fayette County, that is where I go.

Steven D. Jacobson Mon, 24 Nov 1997 13:54:33
I'm tracking John EARNEST and Lusina KIMBRELL (marriage on 29 Feb. 1872) and their family links.  Anyone with clues or data on this family please contact me.  I have other EARNEST data for AL. and contacts with other reseachers on EARNEST links.

I'm also tracking a Marion Earnest whose parents should of been in Fayette Co. around the late 1800's; namely, John & Lusina Kimbrell Earnest.  It's rumored Marion may of killed his wife in a drunken rage around the early 1900's.  Any chance of proving it and or finding out what happened to him or his family?

Brotherton Cemetery

Jim Brotherton  Tue, 25 Nov 1997 10:35:33
About 5 years ago someone called me and ask if it would be alright to put a plaque in the Brotherton Cemetery.  I was not aware that such a place existed until that time.  I did not have enough sense to get a phone number or a location.  My great grandfather moved to Fayette County in 1840 and settled in Hico near Newtonville.  I suppose that that is the location.  Since I live in Walker County I would like to visit there but I need a lead on the location.  Any help would be appreciated.  Jim Brotherton ~ Jasper, AL

McCOLLUM

Robert Aldridge Tue, 25 Nov 1997 13:29:10
In your "Adults Living in Fayette County Prior to the Civil War" [now Soldiers, Statesmen & Scalawags] web page, you have the following listing:

McCOLLUM, James A. - Representative 1830-1832.
McCOLLUM, James K. - Representative 1849-1852. He had been defeated for the Senate in 1834.  He owned and operated mill. Died 1872.

According to a book that I saw recently entitled, "Descendants of Newman McCollum", or something close to that, James K. McCollum served 3 terms as Representative.  It appears that your two James McCollums may be the same James K. McCollum listed in the aforementioned book.  Are you familiar with this book or would you be interested in more information about this book?  If so, please feel free to e-mail me.  Thanks,  Robert W. Aldridge, Camber Corporation

Mary Love Berryman Mon, 01 Dec 1997 07:11:16
Your page is really looking good.  I would like for you to add Lewellen and Priscilla Thornton Moore to the residents in Fayette County before 1850.  John Mayfield Moore, Marinda White Paden and Samuel Peden, Revolutionary War Soldier, lived in Fayette County before 1850.  I will be glad to submit records if you need those.  There are plenty to substantiate them in the Fayette County books.

I would like for you to put a link to My Moore Family which is located on my web page.  The URL is http://www.tyler.net/mlb/ moore.htm.  [Note new web address as of 09 Aug 2009 http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marylove/Moore/MooreTOC.html]

I promised people in Fayette County that I would publish this material a long time ago and am just now getting around to it.  I have quite a bit of information on the descendants of Lewellen Moore and Priscilla Thornton - many of his descendants still live in the area.  I would love to be in touch with them.  I'm not sure how I will handle this.  I do not intend to put living people on the web or anything that would be a security risk.  I am only publishing down though my grandparents.  Thanks for all you do.  Mary Love Berryman http://www.tyler.net/mlb/

McCOLLUM Look Ups

Ron McCollum  Tue, 09 Dec 1997 01:52:51
I had a lot of questions when I placed the query.  I have a copy of the "Newman McCollum" book which starts with Henry McCollum c.1732 Scotland.  His son Newman b. 1774 Camden Dist. SC came to Fayette Co. in 1824.  He is the father of James K. McCollum, the rep. you have listed in People in Fayette Co. prior to the Civil War. I will be glad to do lookups on McCollums.  The lady that compiled the information for this book spent 5 years gathering information and mailed out over 12,000 letters.  There are many related families listed, the index is over 100 pages.

The Newman McCollum Book is almost 500 pages with a 100-page index.  Sorry, but I do not have it computerized.  A copy of this book is at the Winfield Library in Marion Co. and I have been informed that a copy is at the Fayette Library.  Major surname listings include:  BOX (one page in the index), BROWN (one page), DILLARD (one page), HOLLINGSWORTH (four pages), McCALEB (three and 1/2 pages), McCOLLUM (eleven pages), McDONALD (one and 1/2 pages), NICHOLS (two pages), PATTERSON (one page), SMITH (one page) and TUCKER (one page).  Most of  these families are in Fayette and Marion Counties.

I am a novice at genealogy and in the use of computers.  I've been very lucky in the genealogy research, and I'm learning the computer as fast as I can.  I'd love to post a Family Page, but give me just a little more time to learn what I am doing.  Thanks for your interest, Ron McCollum

Craig Scott Watkins Mon, 15 Dec 1997 01:40:26
My gggrandfather Howell Andrew Watkins was born in Fayette County December 25, 1843.  He served in the Civil War as a member of Capt. Freeman's Prison Guards formed in Tuscaloosa.  I have much info on him and his siblings but very little on his father (Howell Nathan "Malcomb" Watkins) or mother.  I would like to have his info included in your list of Adult Persons in Fayette Co. prior to Civil War.  Thanks.

I am researching the following sunames in Fayette Co, from 1850-the present: Cobb, Ward(e), Stillman, Culbertson (Cuthbertson), Taylor and Freeman.

I am also compiling a roster of all men who served in the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA ... which was primarily raised in Fayette Co.  This will eventually be placed in its own website and available for researchers at anytime.  Please include as much "confirmed" military information on the soldier as possible ... Company, enlistment date ... died/survived the war ... promotions ... wounded/POW ... etc.  Also please include contributors name and email/postal address.  Thanks.  Mike Cobb ~ 6116 Kary Lynn South, Ft Worth, TX 76148

WILLIS • COLLINS • BUCKNER

Kay Bauman  Mon, 29 Dec 1997 19:11:44
I am a descendent of James Franklin Willis (b. May 12, 1853 in AL).  He is the only child (best I can determine) of Amy Collins (b. 1826 in SC).  I do not know who his father is but I believe he died before 1870.  James Franklin Willis married Mary Jane Buckner (b. Jan. 20, 1856) on July 14, 1872 in Fayette.  He became an ordained Baptist minister Fayette in June 1888.  Frank and Mary had the following children: Zilda, Margaretta, John William, Ruffis, Zedick Hamilton (Hamp), Tomy.  Frank died in 1926 in Fayette.  I am interested in information about James Franklin and his parents.  I would like to make contact with someone researching any part of this line.

GARTMAN • TUCKER • PRUITT

Watcher881  Tue, 30 Dec 1997 12:32:02
I am researching the Daniel J Gartman family that lived in this county for some time around the 1850-1860 time period.  I was told that Daniel J Gartman was killed in the civil war and his death place is listed as Camp Nelson, Ky.  He married Elizabeth A (Tucker?) Fayette County on July 24, 1853.  She later married a man named Pruitt.
