as depicted here, were ever arranged in this manner.

This map shows the boundaries of Fayette County around about 1831.
"Fayette C.H." is located in the northwest corner of Township 16 South, Range 12 West.
The township numbers are listed on the left side of the map.
The range numbers (not shown) increase going from right to left;
thus, "Millport" is in Township 17 South, Range 15 West.
