DeKalb County ALGENWEB The Fort Payne Journal Fort Payne, Alabama Wednesday, July 10, 1901 Page 1 DIED FROM KICK OF A GUN. Mr. P. R. Slaughter died at his home in the upper end of the county last Thursday morning at 5 o'clock as the result of a peculiar accident. Saturday before, Mr. Slaughter was out squirrel hunting and was walking around a tree with the butt of the gun against his body when the gun was accidentally discharged and the force of the recoil injured his stomach in some way. He was so badly hurt that he was unable to go home, and might have died in the woods, but a neighbor passing a short distance from where he lay was attracted by the peculiar actions of Mr. Slaughter's dog which met him and made demonstrations that seemed intended to draw his attention. He followed the dog and the intelligent animal led him to where its owner lay helpless. The injured man was taken home where he died after five days of intense suffering.
