Researching Benjamin F. Adams who entered County I, 10th. Alabama Infantry from Dekalb County, Alabama. He was a doctor and is buried in Chulafinnee Methodist Church Cemetery, Cleburne County, Alabama. He was born April 15, 1829 in Warren County, Georgia, the son of Benjamin and Emily (Ivey) Adams. I am trying to find the place of death for my ggrandparents John E. Allen b. 1846 in North Carolina d. Mar 1925 and Ann(e) Elizabeth Earle/Earls b. 1850 in South Carolina d Apr 1935. The last known city and state of residence I have for them is Crossville, Dekalb County, Alabama, where I am told by older family members may have been where they died and are buried. Does anyone know how or if original Dekalb County marriage records can be accessed? I found the following transcription by C. Cleek Mann published 1970: "SHASTEM ? OR SHORTEM?, John married Poly Ashberry (?). Bond dated June 18, 1840, 1841, or 1847 ? with Saml. Majors. No other information. (MP labeled Vague and Mutilated." 1850 Dekalb Census Records indicate this should be John Franklin X Mary Ashberry. Mary Ashberry entered land in the area of Dugout Valley in 1848. BOOKOUT, Joseph died August, 1837 in Dekalb, Alabama. I have a Times-Journal article, dated Thursday, November 3, 1977 that reads in part "If you are a descendant of: Hiram Bennett, .....JOSEPH BOOKOUT, or Thomas Chadwick, you can assuredly know your roots were well planted by that Godfearing forefather who erected a lankmark, an altar for the true worshippers of God Almighty in Primitive Baptist Church at Head Springs, Dekalb County, Alabama." I would like to find out if Joseph Bookout is buried in Dekalb County. The only dates I know have his birth - 1785 and death - August, 1837. I am looking for information on the family of Lewis Brandon, b 1780 Va., came to Ala. about 1835. His sons, Hugh H. Brandon, b 1808, Tenn., and Phillip A. Brandon came with him. Possibly brothers to Lewis are Adam and George. All lived in Dekalb County, for some time. Hugh was there as one of the founding families of the Lebanon community from 1850-1870 at least. Phillip was a J.P.C. (judge...) His wife, Elizabeth, is listed in the 1850 Dekalb County Mortality. Hugh's sons were John, Phillip, Rufus Layfette, William C. and Josiah. I am looking for information on the John BROCK and James MORGAN families who left Walker County Georgia after the Civil War (c1872-1875)and moved to Alabama (Dekalb County possibly). John's wife's name was Sarah and they had children named William, John, Nancy, Martha, Mary (Polly), Sarah A.,Mandy J., Eliza and Cornelia. Mary married James Morgan in December 1970. Portions of the Battle of Chickamauga were fought on the farm of John Brock. Records at the battlefield indicate that they moved to Alabama shortly after the war. I am Brenda Curtis. My father Macon Lacey Bruce was born 17 May 1918 in Dekalb County, Alabama to John H. Bruce (b.25 Jul 1874) and Mary Adaline Stephens Bruce (b.14 Sep 1879)(interestingly, Mary Adaline's first husband had been J. R. "Ruff" Bruce, a nephew of my grandfather, John H. Bruce). John H. Bruce was son of Marion F. Bruce (b. ca Jul 1831). The only name I have for Marion's wife is possibly Elizabeth, who was always called Jenny. CAHILL - TEAL

I am attempting to find the father of my Grandfather, John Jackson Cahill who was born on July 22, 1871. I have discovered in the 1870 US Census of Dekalb County, Alabama page 878 my Greatgrandmother, Francis Elizabeth Teal CAHILL residing in the household with her older sister, Rebecca Teal Griffin and Rebecca's son Will. On the same page, but in different households are their mother, Frances Teal & children and a brother Zachariah Teal. In the 1880 US Census for Alabama. I find Francis Elizabeth Teal CAHILL and her son, John Jackson CAHILL living with her older brother, Wm. J. J. Teal & family in Marshall County, Alabama. The 1870 Census was taken June 14, 1870 and my grandfather was not born until July 22, 1871, so there is a 13 month difference there and it puzzles me. If he was illegitimate why the time difference? On my grandfather's death certificate it lists his father's name as Alee CAHILL of Etowah County, Alabama. Could this be either of the male children living in the household of John R. KAHILL in the 1860 Calhoun County, Alabama Census on page 540. Their names and ages were: James A. M. KAHILL 18 & Elisha A. KAHILL age 10? Elisha A. KAHILL and my greatgrandmother, Francis Elizabeth Teal would have been the same age in 1860. If there is anyone in Dekalb County that can help me with this I would be forever greatful. I am seeking information on the family of my great great uncle, Richard Wall Cain (born November 20, 1825, Hall County, Georgia) and his wife, Susannah (Aycock) Cain (born September 17, 1822, Adairsville, Georgia). They married in Cass County, Georgia on December 27, 1849. Their children were: Julius Balfour (born October 29, 1850, Georgia---died 1950); Wall (born July 7, 1854, Georgia---died November 4, 1932); Florence(born May 1, 1857, Georgia); Alice (born July 16, 1859, Georgia); and Paul M. (born October 17, 1860, Georgia). Richard and family were enumerated in the 1850 Gordon County, Georgia Census (occupation-farmer), and were enumerated in the 1860 Cass County, Georgia Census (occupation-doctor). Up until just a few days ago, the only other information that I had on Richard was (1) in 1853/54 he signed legal documents in connection with the settlement of his father's estate, and (2) I have copies of Gordon County, Georgia property deed transfers that Richard was involved in prior to 1861. After then he and his family disappeared. About three or four days ago, I received information over the internet that Richard died in Collinsville, Alabama on July 6, 1895, and that his wife died on November 21, 1887, and I assumed she died in Collinsville also. Would it be possible to have this information confirmed in connection with the date of death,the place of death and burial site for Richard and Susannah? What happened to all the Campbells in Dekalb County (Duck Springs, in particular) after the Civil War? The 1850 & 1860 Census shows 2 large families of Campbells. John & Hannah (Teague?) Campbell, his father James Campbell (of Gwinnett Co, Georgia) and 8 children. His oldest son (Wm. James R. Campbell) married Nancy Angeline McCommack (dau. of David & Celia Whitt McCommack (or McCormack, we have seen it both ways). The father of the other family was Manassah Campbell. I am not sure how many children he had but a daughter (Rachael) married one of Nancy's brothers. Wm Jame R was wounded in the war & family tradition says he came home & died at home. Searching for Chappell info. Mary Elizabeth Kimbell Chappell died in Fyffe, Alabama March 1, 1907. Her husband, Robert Clark Chappell, died and was buried in Henry County, Georgia, Feb 24, 1890. COKER - FREEMAN - HENDERSON LACKEY -DUCKETT - OWENS

Looking for proof that the H. Coker in the 1840 Dekalb census was Henderson Coker of Laurens County, South Carolina. About 1845, he moved on to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, with his wife Susan Freeman of Buncombe County, North Carolina, but he died before the 1850 census. They had twelve children, two of whom (William Downs Coker who was mistakenly given as William D. Cooper and Elizabeth [Coker] Lackey) were in Dekalb County, Alabama, in the 1850 census living with their aunt and uncle Elisha and Anna (Coker) Freeman. Their mother Susan remarried to her husband's uncle, William M. Henderson, and moved back to Alabama, to neighboring Marshall County. (They had a daughter Alabama Henderson who married Luke W. Duckett). Elizabeth Lackey remarried to William Owens of Dekalb County, Alabama, as his second wife. Any information about Henderson Coker, who was the son of Robert B. and Elizabeth (Henderson) Coker of Laurens County, South Carolina, would be much appreciated. Do have proof that Henderson Coker and Elisha and Anna (Coker) Freeman were no longer in South Carolina about 1840/1 when they are named in an estate suit brought by some of the younger children of Robert B. The 1860 census of Dekalb County, Alabama lists two William Craze. One was age 15, born Alabama, in the household of James Craze, 41, born Tennessee, and his wife Louisa, 43, born South Carolina. The other William Craze, age 16, born Alabama, was in the household of Lucy Craze, 65, born North Carolina. Also in household were Elizabeth, age 37, and Margaret, age 31, both born Tennessee. Which one of these Williams was the William C. Crays who married Martha Ann Cordell 1862 and had died by 1870? The other William married an Emily, and was still living in 1870. Can't find a record of this. He might have fought on the Union side. (But why did Sallie hide children and possessions from the HomeGuard, if that was so?) She was born January 30, 1819, and died April 10, 1893, according to information on her headstone. SMITH

I am working on very little information. My grandmother Minnie SMITH was married in St Francis Co Arkansas April 3 1881. Her wedding certificate shows that she was born May 1863 in Alabama. The 1900 census shows that her father was born in Alabama and her mother in Georgia. That is all the firm data that I have to go on the rest is family story that I have not been able to verify. According to my father, his mother Minnie was brought up on a river boat that her father owned and operated on the St Francis River in Akansas (this is probably why I can find no census records either in 1870 or 1880, they were probably never counted due to their gypsy lifestyle) Capt SMITH was supposedly a full blood Cherokee from Alabama. His wife was white from Georgia. At the time of the civil war their river boat was sunk by the yankees so Capt took his wife back to family home in Alabama while he joined Confederate Army. Minnie was born in her grandparents' home. I am not sure where that was but am making the assumption that it was a county like Dekalb that was carved out of the Cherokee nation. The worse part is that I have no record of given names of her parents. She died in Dallas, Texas 6 months before Texas started keeping death records. What I'm hoping for is some indication of a Cherokee family named SMITH that was in Alabama at least from about 1830-1870 and find a clue as to where to look for birth records of Minnie or for someone that may know something of my riverboat capt. Smith, lived in Valley Head, Alabama with his wife Mamie until 1964 when he passed away.Mamie had two sisters that lived up the road from them, one named Eula and the other Bertha.
