CHANCE - BOUTWELL

Is there anyone out there that can tell me how the Chance's and the Sharp's are related? I have become the owner of a couple of ledger's that kept up with the attendee's of the annual Chance reunion's and though there are alot more surname's on there, I find it most interesting that there were A LOT of Sharp's that attend. I know that my grandmother had a first cousin that married a Sharp back in the early 1900's, but the Chance name was still carried due to the fact HE was a Chance.

Any help would be appreciated. I can provide names upon request.

AVANT - LEOPARD - O'NEAL

The main surname line I am researching is AVANT. Francis AVANT's widow was Elizabeth. She was Elizabeth CASE (dtr of John CASE and Lucy THOMAS). She remarried a LEOPARD ca. 1828 in Dallas County after Francis Avant's death. The AVANT children from her first marriage were: Catherine M. Avant who married David D. DUMAS; Mary Avant who married James DOWNES; Nancy Ann Avant (sometimes shown as Mary or Ann) married John G. O'NEAL; Lucy T. Avant who married William Hall; Nathan T. Avant who married Theodocia Wilson (from Perry County); John C. Avant who married Nancy MEREDITH. I am hoping to learn additional information about the LEOPARD line that Elizabeth AVANT married into as a widow. Two sons were born to the Leopard union, William and Charles LEOPARD ca. 1828-1831. John G. O'Neal was at one time the guardian of the 3 youngest Avant children and a landowner outside of Selma in the late 1840's. Looking for information regarding the O'NEAL line affiliated by his marrige to Nancy Ann AVANT.

I am also trying to discover any additional information about the AVANT children who grew up in Dallas County possibly near Selma. Any information related to this query would be most appreciated. Thanks

Her husband Alonzo Twilley's death certificate would great too. he died Jan. 23,1893 and I believe he is buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Magnolia. I will be very grateful for any help you can give me.

WILSON

I saw your posting on the Dallas County Alabama Rootsweb mailing list concerning information about Ezekiel B. Wilson. I too would like additional information about him. He was one of my great, great, great, grandfathers. I believe you have a couple of mistakes in your message. First, I do not think he died in Clarke County Mississippi but rather in Clarke County Alabama. The final settlement of his estate dated July 7, 1870 is recorded in the Probate Minutes, Book "N", page 92 at the Courthouse at Grove Hill, Alabama. I do not have a copy of this settlement but did take some notes. According to what I found E.B. Wilson died at least 60 days prior to October 16, 1863. The heir named in the settlement in July 1870 were: Washington Wilson, James M. Wilson, Ezekiel Wilson, and Mary E. Rasco.

There is also indications of a settlement in the estate of N. Burdine Wilson, (Nathaniel Burdine Wilson) eldest son of Ezekiel B. Wilson, recorded in Book "L", page 286 dated February 15, 1866. At that time the record show that James Wilson was living in the state of Iowa. N. B. Wilson also died in Clarke County Alabama per the probate records of that County.

The other error in your posting was that Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco was a grand daughter of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson. She in fact was a daughter of his and my great, great, grandmother. Mary Ann Elizabeth Wilson was born December 12, 1834 and died April 27, 1874. Her first husband (my great, great, grandfather) was William Ephraim Rasco who she married in Dallas County Alabama on October 10, 1852. William Ephraim Rasco died November 2, 1866 and on April 5, 1869 Mary Ann married Joseph S. Drapers. They moved to Kemper County Mississippi where Drapers ran away leaving her and her six Rasco children. Mary Ann may have briefly returned to Alabama but was listed in the 1870 census of Neshoba County Mississippi, page 375, family number 1286 as Mary Ann Rasco with children: William T. Rasco, Wilson E. Rasco, James M. Rasco, Martha T. Rasco, and a negro servant named Jackson Rasco. Living on the near by farm of William J. Gentry, was another son, my Great grandfather, John H. Rasco. On the farm of James Wilson was another son, Ezekiel B. Rasco. This census was taken on June 24, 1870. On August 31, 1870, Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco married her first husband nephew, James Lafayette Rasco and they moved to Scott County Mississippi where they had two children: Richmond Austin Rasco born July 5, 1871 and James Rasco born April 24. 1874. Both mother and infant died three days later. Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco is buried in the Contrell Methodist Church Cemetery just south of Lena, Mississippi in Scott County.

Ezekiel Burdine Rasco (1800-1863) was married to Sarah H. Rasco a daughter of Jesse Rasco and Elizabeth (possibly Harrison). I have not been able to locate a record of their marriage but I am sure it was in Dallas County Alabama and is one of the unrecorded marriages of that county. That Ezekiel B. Wilson was married to Sarah H. Rasco is proven in the will and estate settlement of her father, Jesse Rasco who died in Dallas County in 1840. Ezekiel and Sarah with their children were listed in the 1850 census of Dallas County Alabama. They had moved away by 1860, apparently to Clarke County Alabama. I believe Ezekiel and his son Nathaniel or Nathan, ran a hotel there. Apparently Sarah, Ezekiel's wife died before he did possibly in Dallas County.

Nathan Burdine Wilson married Mary Jane (Fisher) Rasco the widow of John Alton Rasco a brother of William Ephraim Rasco. John Alton Rasco died in Dallas County Alabama on July 4, 1865 and sometimes between then and whenever Nathan B. Wilson died, she married him. She moved back from Clarke County Alabama to Dallas County and was living with some of the Wilson. She then married a man named T. D. Booth and they moved to White County Arkansas.

It is true that two of Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco's sons lived and died in Clarke County Mississippi at Stonewall, Mississippi. There were also other relatives there as well as Scott, Leake, and Nashoba Counties. I believe that the son Ezekiel Burdine Wilson jr. was also in Mississippi, perhaps Kemper County. I have not tried to trace these Wilson children or descendants.

As for who the parents of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson was or exactly where in South Carolina he was born, I do not know. I would like to know however so if you find out please let me know. There was a military officer in the Continental Army from South Carolina named Ezekiel B. Wilson. Our Ezekiel Burdine Wilson may have been his son or a nephew.

That is about all I know at this time. How are you related or connected to Ezekiel Burdine Wilson?

MONTGOMERY

MONTGOMERY, Andrew (ca. 1780-1860) NC SC AL also Doherty/Dougherty, Woods

I am trying to find proof that Andrew MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1785 Mecklenburg County NC d. ca. 1860 Summerfield, Dallas County AL was the father of my great-great grandfather, William MONTGOMERY b. 22 FEB 1807 probably in SC near the NC border d. 13 MAY 1891 Choctaw County MS.

Andrew MONTGOMERY was the son of James MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1735/45 Lancaster County PA d. Mecklenburg County NC 1793 and Ann Woods b. ca. 1753 Lancaster County d. Mecklenburg County 1793.

James MONTGOMERY was the son of John MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1710/15 Northern Ireland d. ca. 1788 Mecklenburg County NC and Martha MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1715/20 Northern Ireland d. ca. 1799 Mecklenburg County NC who immigrated to Lancaster County PA ca. 1735.

Andrew MONTGOMERY married Eleanor/Ellen Doherty/Dougherty b. ca. 1800 NC. They were married by 1825 when they sold 116 acres inherited from Eleanor’s father Robert Doherty. Their children all born in NC were: James Newton b. ca. 1828, Samuel W. b. ca. 1829, Mary A.L. b. ca. 1831, Martha J. b. ca. 1833, Sarah R. b. ca. 1835, Hannah A. b. ca. 1837, Ellen S. b. ca. 1839, John A. b. ca. 1841. They all moved to Summerfield, Dallas County AL in 1845. Sources: researcher William Vaughn Montgomery of Selma AL and 1850 Dallas County AL census.

Since Eleanor Doherty was 15 years younger than Andrew, it is possible that she was his second wife. I am searching for a possible first wife for Andrew who may have been the mother of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY b. 22 FEB 1807 probably in SC near the NC border d. 13 MAY 1891 Choctaw County MS. William lived somewhere in Alabama during the 1830’s before permanently settling in Choctaw County MS ca. 1838/39. Andrew’s first wife may have also been the mother of 2 additional children, Andrew and John who reportedly went to Texas. Researcher Charlotte M. Brett stated that Andrew’s sons Andrew, John and William moved to Texas.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated. I will gladly pay for any postage or photocopying costs and will pass along any new information that I receive.

ALEXANDER

Seeking information on Alexanders living in Dallas County in mid 1800's. Sample ALEXANDER and wife Abigail; James S. ALEXANDER and wife Eliza; Ulysses ALEXANDER.

All were in 1850 census. Sample had probably been in Dallas County since 1840 or earlier. James S. was married to Eliza Russel in Dallas County in 1847. James S. moved west to Pontotoc County, MS by 1860. Sample had followed him to MS by 1870.

The Abigail ALEXANDER who died in 1859 and is buried in Fulford Cemetery in Dallas County may be Sample's wife.

Was Sample the father of James S.? What was their relationship to Ulysses? (Ulysses had a son named Sample.)

Does anyone have a listing of graves in the Fulford Cemetery? Any more Alexanders there?

Thanks for any guidance.

HODGENS

Would you know the whereabouts of a Cahawba Valley Baptist Church / Cem ? My ggg gfather's obit (John B HODGENS) mentions it as his burial spot. I have looked in Bibb Co (his home) and Shelby Co. with no luck - I notice the old town of Cahaba in Dallas Co and thought I'd search there.

Any assistance is appreciated,
