Transcribed by Kenneth Flowers on August 13, 2008=========================================A BRIEF HISTORY OF LOCKHART BAPTIST CHURCHCELEBRATING THE 50TH HOMECOMING - APRIL 14, 1996The Lockhart Baptist Church was organized on April 7, 1946. There were twenty-five charter members: Mr. & Mrs. Harper Nelson, Mr. & Mrs. Collis Helms, Mr. A.C. Watford, Mrs. W.H. Rawls, Miss Ethel Donaldson, Mr. & Mrs. W.A. Donaldson, Miss Margaret Shows, Mrs. C.W. Simmons, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Cowart, Mrs. John Brown, Mrs. Evelle Wallace, Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Lassiter, Mr. & Mrs. Jack Davis, Mr. & Mrs. A.M. Stickland, Mr. James Elmore, Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Abescumbil, Mrs. Laura Wallace. The church called its first pastor, Rev. T.F. McReynolds on June 16, 1946. The first Sunday School was organized on July 14, 1946, with the following officers and teachers: Jack Davis -Superintendent; Ned Perry - Secretary; J.E. Scarborough - Adult Teacher; Clyde Love, Sr. - Assistant Adult Teacher; Miss Ethel Donaldson - Youth Teacher; Mrs. B.B. Sadler - Intermediate Teacher; Mrs. Arthur Forrester - Junion Girls Teacher; Mrs. Abescumbil - Junior Boys Teacher; and Mrs. A.L. Lassiter - Primary Teacher.Organization of the first Baptist Training Union was on October 13, 1946 with the following persons being elected as officers and leaders: Elsie McReynolds - Secretary & Treasurer; Mrs. T.F. McReynolds - Adult Leader; Harper Nelson - Intermediate Leader; Ruth McReynolds - Junior Leader; and Mrs. A.L. Lassiter - Primary Leader.The first Woman's Missionary Union was organized on May, 1948, with Mrs. Roy Copeland as President and Mrs. A.S. McLeod as Secretary.The first Brotherhood meeting of the Lockhart Baptist convened on May 3, 1953 at 2:30 p.m. and elected these men as their first officers; J.C. Tew - President; J.L. Byrd, Sr. - Vice President; Harper Nelson - Program Chairman; A.S. McLeod - Activity Chairman; Collis Helms - Song Leader; and B.G. Thomasson - Secretary & Treasurer.The land on which the church now stands was donated in 1947 by Mrs. Lela Cannon, and the pastorium was constructed on its present site in 1956. The sanctuary that we now enjoy was build in 1964 and was dedicated on June 4th of that same year.In the past fifty years, we have had twenty pastors to serve our chuch. They are: T.F. McReynolds, C.O. Stewart, Horace Chance, C.A. Walker, Wyatt McKay, R.K. Gwin, Bill McCrory, T.A. Coleman, LaDon Hall, Jerry Harris, Rudolph Phillips, H.T. Dickie, Wallace Davis (Interim), Jim Caraway, Ed McDaniel, Charles Newman (Interim) Jack Thomasson, Glen Peters, Kerry Saxon (Interim), Gerald Johns, and our present pastor, Rev. Kerry Saxon.Men who have served on our board of deacons over the years are: Jim Cowart, Jack Davis, W.A. Donaldson, Collis Helms, Willis Cook, Harper Nelson, A.M. Strickland, John Holley, R.E. Paul, T.J. Plant, J.L. Byrd, Sr, A.C. Watford, J.C. Tew, Alford Holley, A.S. McLeod, George Center, Ray Hall, C.C. Bowden, John Boyington, Larry Crosby, Pat Schofield, Wayne Mitchell, Hob Schofield, Joe Brooks, and Council Weeks.The church has ordained the following men into the gospel ministry: Arthur Forrester, Jr. in 1951; Wyatt McKay in 1953; Lonnie Byrd in 1954; Leon Gainey in 1955; Jack Thomasson in 1979; and James Pickron in 1983.The church has commissioned on missionary, Charleen Heisler Smith in 1985.Today, the church is very proud to celebrate 50 years of service to our Lord and to be a part of the community of Lockhart, Alabama.
