Surnames: WINCHESTER, GARLAND
Submitter: Karen Duncan Sedlecky (Ladykdee@aol.com)
Date: 04 Feb 1999
I am researching the surname Winchester.  I am told the family of Richard Winchester lived around Freedom Hills in Colbert Co. AL.  Richard Winchester married Ann Garland and had a daughter, Mary Lily and a son, Boney.  There may be other children.  A nephew of Boney's was named Hillright. Their daughter, Mary Lily, married George Washington Duncan around 1880s and lived in Colbert and Lauderdale Co.'s. Richard Winchester may have been nicknamed "Dandy Dan" and he owned a store, I thought the store was located in Cherokee. There may be stories about some of the Winchester hiding out in Freedom Hills.  Shall I say that I have heard that the law would at times be looking for one of them? Ha!  I would love to make a connection with this branch.  If anyone has any stories concerning Winchesters or can make a connection with the names above, please contact me.

Date: 01 Mar 1999
I am searching in the MS area and placing this query in Colbert County ti see if anyone viewing the site might have some information pertaining to our search. My Mother and I have been searching for any and all information regarding "Henry Middleton? Shurbet."  H.M.S. resided in Prentiss and enlisted in the Confederacy in 1862 in 19th Infantry, CO-K. We have copies of documents that show this but we are unable to find much else.  On his military papers his name was usually spelled "Sherbit", however, there are different spellings as I'm sure you know.  He served at Richmond VA, at Chimbrazo Hospital as a Guard, and later in Columbus, and return to Prentiss at the close of the Civil War.  H.M.S. was born 1814 in SC, and died and is buried in Prentiss in 1892.  He was my G-G-G Grandfather.  His Son, to whom I descend, was Zadus Brister Shurbet.  One Genealogist suggests that he was a spy for the Confederacy, and suggests that that is the reason we are unable to find much information.  If you can be of any assistance, Mom and I would sure appreciate your help.  Your Heritage Friend, Larry

I was told as a child that her parents were killed early in her life and as a result I am having a hard time tracking my family tree. Is there any way I can find out if there is a birth certificate on file for her and how I can get the information. My mother has been dead for several so I can't ask her and there was no info in her papers. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

I am looking for information on Dickerson Hurst married to Grace E. Kirk.  They lived in Franklin Co. before Colbert Co. was formed from it and records could be either place.  Dickerson's father and mother were Henry Hurst and Mary Austin.  He was born in 1827 in what was  then Franklin Co. Grace and Dickerson had a son named John who was born in Pickens Co. (where Grace's family was) on August 27, 1852.  I believe that they returned to the Fanklin/Colbert area before moving west to Arkansas, but would like to substantiate that, document other children, etc.  I am also looking for information on William Kirk who may have lived for a short time (1848-1858?)in this area.  Please reply to my email address.  I don't get back to the query lists very often.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Kathy Kirk, Birmingham, AL

Looking for sources to research on broad AL. History prior to 1800. Seeking information which may finally locate the birth of my great grandfather, Philip Keller, supposedly at Decatur, Alabama. Oral history says this man was "related" to Arthur Keller, father of Helen. However, I have learned that many Keller families lay claim to that relationship. I do not know the names of Philip's parents. Father might have been George,Simon,John, Martin. Philip Keller held land in northern Alabama. Moved to Philadelphia where he married Julia Ann Brindel. Believed to be part of militia. His father could have been military man stationed in your area. I have no information of existing military personnel or posts in Northwest Alabama at that time. Was N.W.Alabama part of Mississippi? Can someone direct me to an informed source on Alabama military history? i.e. military posts or assignments? Any birth lists for those early days or any existing churches? Thanks for any small suggestion or reply. Louise Keller Schlaff
