Bennett Cemetery
Long Creek Community

Contributed by Kay Anderson, Mexboro, AL.

Note From Kay

I located this cemetery by going from Hwy 106 West onto Co Road 15.  At the crossroads of Hwy 15 and Co road 16, take a right and go .6 miles on a dirt road.  There will be a yellow iron pipe gate on the left.  One-half mile into the road is a group of trees that have not been cut.  It will be on the left side of the logging road and after you turn left, as the roads seems to make a Y.  The cemetery will be on the right side of that road.

There is a very old iron wire fence around the area where the Bennetts are buried and where a couple of graves have been dug into.  The rest of the markers are on the outside of this fence.  This is an all-but-abandoned cemetery in much need of care. Tommy Beverly of the Long Creek Community was kind enough to take me in on a 4 wheeler since it is locked property at this time. Much thanks to him for his assistance in getting these pictures.

Location: T8, R12, S35

Directions: Floyd Tillman took me to a place located off Country road 15, where he pointed to a place several feet off the highway where the cemetery is located.  I noted what once was a road as a depression that now was filled with bushes, tall grass, vines, berries and small pine trees.

Date Recorded: Received Bennett Cemetery records from Mrs. Opal T. Scott, BCHGS volunteer at the Greenville Public Library, Greenville, Alabama in 1996.  Survey compiled by the Butler County Historical and Genealogical Society.

First known interment: per headstone marker, 1877.

Last known interment: unknown, seems to be 1933

NOTE: Results as written per earlier survey.

This cemetery has not been researched or relocated since the first survey was done.  I do not know the date of this first survey, only the results that are written here.

This is a photo of the cemetery as you approach it from Hwy 15. It is now on land owned by International Paper. The cemetery, like many more across the nation, is susceptible to vandialsim as shown in the photo below where one grave was dug up.
