HEALTH STATISTICS FOR APRIL
Calera, Ala., May 23, 1898

Editor Sentinel:
For the month of April just past there was reported forty-four births as having occurred during that month in this county. Of this number 31 were white and 13 were colored.

The deaths amongst the whites were Mrs. Catherine Frost, Sebron Brasher, Mrs. Amanda Britton, Mrs. S.E. Bilbry, Willie Crawford, Philip Thompson, H.C. Fancher, Miss Martha Foust and Jessie Ida Turner. Total, 9.

The colored deaths were Sarah Smith, Leon Turner, Lewis Johnson and Caroline Wiley. Total, 4.

It is a notable fact that consumption was given as the cause of death in three out of four deaths reported for the colored race, while only one death was reported from this cause amongst the whites.

Amongst the whites who died during the month but three are reported who were under sixty years of age. The remainder, six in number, were all past sixty years at time of death. This is a very interesting fact and makes the average of life of those who died a little less than fifty.
