CSA Soldiers Cemetery Marker Dedication

Contributed by Ron and Gayle Thomas The cemetery markers of two Henry County Confederate soldiers were dedicated today in a ceremony conducted at Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Special guest of honor at the dedication was Mrs. Stacia Chance Grace, Henry County’s only surviving daughter of a Confederate veteran. Markers were dedicated at the graves of Augustus James Chance and Berry King, father and grandfather of Mrs. Stacia Chance Grace of Headland. Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church, founded in 1834, is Henry County’s oldest active church. |

Larry Smith, official Henry County historian, was master of ceremonies and featured speaker for a program that included dulcimer music by Mr. Royce Sellers, songs by Mr. and Mrs. Gary Smith, original poetry by Mr. Doug Messick, a welcome address by Mrs. Sharman Ramsey of UDC Chapter #1342, a twenty-one gun salute by Sons of Confederate Veterans Chapter #809, and bagpipe accompaniment by Mr. Jammie McDaniels. |

| County political figures, historians, prominent citizens, and dozens of just good old Henry County folks enjoyed a meaningful ceremony in a truly beautiful setting as this tribute was paid to Mrs. Grace and her family. |
