William Jackson Davis Family

Contributed by Sue Webb

This picture was made about 1883 probably in Henry County Alabama. It shows William Jackson Davis and third wife Mahala Ware and their baby son Walter. The young men standing are 5 sons of William and first wife Susan Cannington. Standing (left to right) are: Columbus Jackson "Lum", John Henry, Joseph Lee "Joe", James Samuel "Sam" and William Edward "Will".

William Jackson DAVIS was born December, 29 1832 in Randolph County Georgia. His father was Henry Hugh Davis and his mother was Tabitha MOORE, both of Randolph County Georgia. On December 4, 1856 in Randolph Co GA he married Susan CANNINGTON, born in Georgia in 1839. Susan's father is unknown but her mother's given name was Mary. William and Susan Davis had 7 known children, all  but Benjamin were born in Randolph Co GA. Benjamin was born in Alabama.  Their children were:

William Edward Davis (12/12/1859 - 08/02/1941)
Benjamin Davis (1860 - 1877)
Emma Davis (02/20/1863 - 03/28/1931)
James Samuel Davis (09/08/1865 - 05/18/1938)
Joseph Lee Davis (05/20/1867 - 01/10/1959)
John Henry Davis (02/1870 - 08/20/1951)
Columbus Jackson Davis (05/03/1871 - 10/26/1953)

William and Susan can't be found on the 1870 census.   They most likely had more children than who are known given the 17 year gap between the 1860 census and Susan's death in 1877. I'd love to hear from anyone that may know more about this family.

On May 6, 1862 William Davis enlisted with the Confederate States of America as a private attached to Company F 32nd Georgia Infantry at Randolph County Georgia. He served with the Army of Virginia until they surrendered April 9, 1865. He received a pension for his military service. Susan Davis died 1877 and is buried at the Sharon Methodist Church Cemetery in Randolph Co. GA.

On August 31, 1879 at Clay Co. GA William married Lou BROWN. She was born 1854 in Georgia and she died a few days before October 22, 1880. Her parents are unknown as well as her burial location. The Cuthbert Appeal, a newspaper published at Cuthbert GA posted a short notice on October 22, 1880 telling of her death:

"Mrs. W J Davis died at her residence near Sharan, in this county, on Tuesday last."

William next married Mahala H. WARE before 1882, born December 10, 1849 in Georgia. She was the daughter of John and Margaret Ware. William and Mahala moved across the river into Henry Co. AL about 1883. They had 3 known children, all raised in Henry Co. AL on the family farm. Their children were:

Walter Warren Davis (05/20/1882 - 09/25/1948
Richard F. Davis (06/1884 - Aft. 1951)
Minnie L. Davis (01/1887 - Bef. 1951)
