Temple Avenue (1898)
Looking west from the Turner Hotel (second floor of Harkin's Store) at the old County Courthouse (upper left) and square.  The men in the foreground are hauling cotton down Temple Avenue, which was and still is the main north-south axis of Fayette.  The year is 1898.  Note the woman standing on the upper porch in the right background shaking out a blanket (see enlarged image here).  The original photo is only 2" x 2.5" so the recovery of detail is a miracle.
