55th Alabama Infantry Muster Roll

Cherokee County soldiers made up Companies "B" and "K". Goshen, a community no longer on maps, is on the southern edge of Cherokee County, appearing on an 1864 map on the Center to Piedmont road just north of Piedmont (old Cross Plains) and west of Terrapin creek. Goshen is mentioned here 76 times, with Goshen soldiers in Companies D, G, I, and K. Cherokee County and nearby place names have been highlighted by Travis Hardin, clarity@intelec.us

[19 May 1836-19 Aug 1888, Tullahoma, TN] (a merchant in Bellefonte; enlisted, May 61, as captain and raised a company of Martin's 2nd Confederate Regiment; wounded, Shiloh, in the head; formed a battalion of six AL companies after Shiloh, denoted as 4th, 10th, or 16th AL Battalion prior to Feb 63 when it was combined with Norwood's Battalion to form the 55th AL Regiment; Snodgrass led the battalion at Baton Rouge, Corinth, and later commanded the regiment; promoted to command brigade; mustered out, Atlanta; took oath of allegiance, Nashville, 18 May 65; returned to Scottsboro, aged 29, where he engaged in various business activities until his death; he was 6' 1" tall, with gray eyes, a fair complexion, and dark hair)

[23 November 1828-12 Nov 1891, Jackson Co., AL] (a planter from Jackson Co.; enlisted as 1st Lt., Bradford's Co., 2nd AL; returned home and raised 5 companies which became Norwood's Battalion; battalion was assigned to 42nd TN and captured, Ft. Donelson, 16 Feb 62; Norwood was interned, Camp Chase, then Ft. Warren, MA; exchanged for 3 lieutenants, 5 Aug 63; battalion reorganized as 6th AL Battalion; Norwood was promoted to Lt.
